Curated Picks | June 19

As we commemorate Juneteenth; as we resolve to speak out and fight for racial justice; as we grapple with the inequities that this crisis has brought very much to light — many of us are moved to take action while still staying close to home, or "in (or near) place". This week's curated picks offers a few ways to observe, support and participate in movements that work to promote equity in nature — that can be activated on wherever we are. We also lend a few resources intended to nourish our minds and spirits during this chapter — to fortify us to do the good work ahead.

The Home of a Hero.

Our friends at Casey Trees offer a few virtual options to observe Juneteenth — from the safe and oh-so-accessible place that is your device. They suggest a tour of Cedar Hill, the home of Frederick Douglass: once enslaved freedom-fighter, statesman, journalist, activist, hero and so much more. (And, hey, there’s a Sacred Place there!)

Virtual ways to honor Juneteenth

#WeHiketoHeal

Next week, be sure to follow along with the #wehiketoheal movement — “a week of resistance in the form of story telling, reflection and individual healing hikes” to honor Black healing. It encourages women to share their stories of how the outdoors, mindfulness and journaling have helped them heal. Next week should be awesome — follow or support this initiative!

Recreate Responsibly — yes please!

Concerned about what responsible re-entry might look like as parks re-open? How can this happen — in reality? In this podcast, Unlikely Hikers unpacks things in a super accessible way (that makes you feel like you’re chatting with your best friend on the couch). Oh, and, leaders from REI and Mt. Rainier National Park are there, too.
