Time Capsule Program

In celebration of Nature Sacred’s 25th anniversary, we hope to inspire the creation of a number of time capsules to be buried at various Sacred Places. This is a moment of reflection, celebration, and imagination for the years ahead.

Sacred Place Time Capsules

This Fall, we are excited to offer $2000 grants to Firesouls who are interested in creating a Time Capsule and for other needs their Sacred Place may have. Whether you are new to the Network or have been with us since the beginning, all Firesouls are eligible and encouraged to apply. The grant is intended to cover costs of tools and materials such as shovels or a container, as well as any event and  planning costs (food, tables, signage, etc.). We encourage you to make this a celebration, a gathering of meaning-making and joy. Think flower plantings, journal readings, mindfulness activities, art activities and more.

What should I include in my Time Capsule? Prompts to help inspire:

  • What purpose does your Sacred Place primarily serve in your community? Memorabilia such as pamphlets or photos that reflect this are great to include in a Time Capsule.
  • Who does your Sacred Place serve? What is your community interested in including in the Time Capsule?
  • How long has your Sacred Place been a part of your community? Do you have any keepsake items from when the Sacred Place first opened?
  • Can you recall a particularly special moment in your Sacred Place? Do you have a photo or keepsake from this moment?
  • Have you held events or functions at your Sacred Place? What did you do? Do you have any fliers, photos or other assets from the events?
  • Are there any particular features that are unique to your community or Sacred Place?
  • How do visitors spend time in your Sacred Place? Photos and journal entries are an excellent way to capture these special moments.
  • What do you hope people will find when they uncover your Time Capsule in the future?

Time Capsule container Inspiration

We want to ensure that our Time Capsules are nature-friendly. That’s why we’ve pulled together a list of container ideas that won’t degrade or leave anything behind in the soil. We encourage you to try repurposing old items — and think creatively beyond this list! Just be sure that any plastic capsules are made of pure polyethylene or polypropylene plastic. Do not use polyvinyl chloride piping, as it will quickly degrade, leach into the soil and damage items within.

Some ideas include:

  • Rubbermaid tupperware container with lid (water tight)
  • 2-liter soda bottle
  • Lettuce boxes/containers
  • Milk or water gallon jug
  • Old tool box with latch
  • A stainless steel time capsule such as this one

Requirements

Below is a list of asset requests that we ask you to collect during the Time Capsule planning process, as well as on the day of the burying event.

  • Photos of the Time Capsule contents
  • A summary of the Time Capsule contents
  • Photos of the burial site
  • Photos of visitors at the event and other meetings involving planning
  • A testimonial from yourself
  • A testimonial from event participant(s)
  • Journal entries from the day of the event

And remember to encourage visitors to sit on your bench and leave a note in the journal!

PSST: We will be doing the a time capsule with our staff and Board too. So we will all be connected and interconnected as we imagine a greener, healthier world.

"Today I became someone different. I made something very special come alive. A place where we could sit, think, get outside and get our minds together."
