For the Historic Anacostia Block Association (HABA), nature is not just scenery; it is a vital component of the neighborhood’s health, historic identity, and community strength.
Why Nature is Important to HABA
Community Health & Well-being: Access to green spaces like Anacostia Park is essential for the mental and physical health of Ward 8 residents, offering a "local oasis" for recreation and stress reduction.
Environmental Justice: HABA participates in advocacy to ensure Historic Anacostia receives equitable investment in its parks and natural infrastructure, countering historical neglect of the river and its surrounding land.
Neighborhood Cooling & Resilience: Heritage trees and green spaces serve as critical "green infrastructure," reducing the "urban heat island" effect during DC summers and helping manage stormwater to prevent local flooding.
Social Connection: Natural spaces in Anacostia have historically served as the "cornerstone of community life," where neighbors gather for block parties, children play, and residents build the social ties that define the association.

My Sacred Place

Old Market House Square

Built in 1913, Old Market House Square Park is a centerpiece of the Anacostia Historic District. When it needed a little revitalization almost a century later, a broad coalition of invested partners worked to restore it, while understanding the importance of preserving some of its unique historic attributes.

"In the midst of pain, anger and frustration, this is an oasis of calm and beauty."
