Chris was a first responder on May 22, 2011 when one of the largest EF5 tornadoes in modern history hit Joplin, resulting in the destruction of 35% of the town. He has since been tasked with rebuilding two parks completely destroyed, one aquatic center that was destroyed and renovating two other parks that were moderately affected by the tornado. He is currently working to replace over 20,000 trees lost in the May 22nd event. As of today he has overseen efforts to replant over 12,000 trees.
Chris was personally recognized on the House Floor of the Missouri House of Representatives in recognition for efforts related to the May 22 tornado with the Outstanding Missourian Award; the highest award of recognition given to civilians by the Missouri House of Representatives.
