About this Sacred Place
What was once a bleak, rubble-filled prison yard is now an expanded greenspace with two benches for reflection, flower beds and contemplative paths. Nature Sacred and several partners worked together to transform the prison yard at the same time of creating a Horticulture and Arts program at MTC. While earning Master Gardener certificates, inmates beautified a prison yard that is now a peaceful space to walk through and sit and reflect in. The program is providing inmates with the opportunity to learn horticulture skills while at the same time exposing them to plants and greenery as opposed to concrete, brick, asphalt and steel bars that are their current daily reality. The hope is that this program will enhance the inmates surroundings and ultimately help reduce the number of inmates that return to prison.
