The Edgemere community in New York City’s Jamaica Bay area has experienced decades of disinvestment, environmental and social injustice, flooding, pollution, and the effects of wildfires, and is in dire need of a community healing space. Founded in 2021, The Garden by the Bay is a place to be still, to listen to birds sing, and to feel the sun on one’s face while looking out at the water on Jamaica Bay. The garden currently includes 32 growing beds, a children’s growing area, a small seating garden, a central structure for storage, meeting areas, and a greenhouse. The Sacred Place will include enhancements to an unfinished expanded area of the garden. The Garden by the Bay desires to layer in a Sacred Place to provide additional designated spaces for community gatherings, and to enhance the capacity for healing that community members already seek here.
